Oxfordshire ClimateXchange update #39 - Sept ‘08

Welcome to September's update - judging by the amount of events coming up, it's certainly back to school and work time. I hope you had a good summer - even though August was the dullest and one of the wettest on record, with parts of the UK seeing less sunshine than in any year since 1929. Got something to share about the climate? Send it in to info@climatex.org by 15th September for the next newsletter

1. IN THE NEWS...

Green grousing
Is there anything worse than the government telling us to be green? Yes.
Companies, it seems. A survey from Legal & General reinforces the cliche
that the Brits are bloody minded libertarians at heart and want to make
their own decisions and choices on how green to be. Full story

2. PLANET EARTH SEASON IS HERE

 - including the jaw-dropping outdoor, free Earth from the Air exhibition coming to Oxford Castle from late Sept-Jan 9th. Next update will feature plenty of opportunities to see it, combined with a host of events. An Oxford Inspires brochure is available for distribution. If you could help distribute it, please contact olivia.Thornton@Oxfordshire.gov.uk  with your name, address and number of copies requested. The full diary of events will be online soon.

3. COMMUNITIES UPDATE
3.1
Challenge North Leigh had a lovely day for their Green Picnic with only one short shower. Lots of people picnicked and the children loved the assault course. Check their rather fantastic website for news of future events: www.challenge-northleigh.co.uk/

3.2 EAST OXFORD CAR CLUB UPDATE

Abi writes: I just wanted to update you on the East Oxford group's progress towards a car club (see www.carclubs.org.uk and www.carplus.org.uk for more info on car clubs and their green credentials).

We did a small information gathering / awareness raising exercise recently - delivered leaflets to 400 households and then went door to door, speaking to 63 people, to gauge interest in a car club and to see what features would be important for it to work in our area (leaflet info is on our provisional website www.oxcar.org.uk). We got resoundingly enthusiastic responses and are now working with Commonwheels, a not for profit car club, to get cars on the streets of East Oxford in November (www.commonwheels.org.uk).

We are looking to build a fleet combining good, fuel efficient, reliable resident donated cars with a couple of new ones (hoping one of those will be electric).
