ClimateXchange update #29

Events are happening again - last week saw two climate change and gardeners questions times in Kirtlington and at the Northmoor Trust, both stimulating very interesting discussions ranging from what sort of trees to plant, to dealing with global food security - and everything else in between! There seems to be a plethora of further food related events - see the events listing at the end for more details. If you've got an Open Gardens event coming up this year contact us for Climate change and gardening info.

Oxfordshire ClimateXchange update #29 - Jan ‘08

Weather

On Friday 18th, London had its warmest January night ever recorded when temperatures reached 13.2c (55.8f). Meanwhile Oxfordshire seems to have been spared the worst of the floods.

Observer Ethical Awards

Given the wealth of climate champions locally, why not give Oxfordshire a boost and nominate your favourites - categories include ‘best local retailer' ‘ethical kids award', ethical business award,  local group or business or family.

Previous winners have included the Carr family from Summertown, and Averil Stedeford's Eco-house.  The closing date for votes and nominations is 2nd  March 2008.

Calling all poets and illustrators!

Re: Versing the Damage - Notes from the Climate Journey.

Oxfordshire ClimateXchange is collaborating with Oxford's performance poetry magazine The Nail for a special on the theme of climate change.

Re:versing the damage: notes from the climate journey aims to inspire a deeper engagement with climate change from many angles. Its ingredients will be drawn from themes from the Climate change creative writing workshops, combined with writing on any aspect of climate change, spiced with edited articles, and served with illustrations and photos. Get cooking!

Please submit poems of no more than 150 lines (including spaces) to sophie@the-nail.co.uk, or post to The Nail, Hammer and Tongue, 16B Cherwell Street, Oxford OX4 1BG by 1st March 2008.

If you would like to submit your work to illustrate sections of the magazine, please contact sophie@the-nail.co.uk for more details. You might want to check out the themes and more info here: http://climatex.org/articles/creative-climates/reversing-damage-notes-climate-journey/

Trialling Personal Carbon Allowances

Personal Carbon Allowances could be an important new policy option. There are many unknown aspects to a potential scheme, particularly in relation to people's behaviour - for instance how people respond to an ‘allowance'. Many of these could be tested through a trial as described in this latest ECI report which can be read here: http://www.eci.ox.ac.uk/research/energy/downloads/fawcett-pca07.pdf
