Electricity, climate change and Co2 footprints

  • Our CO2 (carbon dioxide) footprint is the amount of CO2 which we produce from energy consumption in our daily activities. CO2 is the main gas responsible for the climate change we are experiencing.
  • The domestic sector consumes 28% of all energy generated and is responsible for 27% of UK CO2 emissions[2].  Of this, approximately 60% is used for space heating, 25% for hot water heating, and 15% used for lighting and appliances[3].(could be shown as chart)
  • In 2004, the energy supply sector was responsible for about 36 % of the total UK Carbon dioxide emissions[4].UK fuel mix
  • Using low-energy light bulbs will reduce your CO2 footprint from energy consumption, and save you money.
  • The electricity we get from the national grid comes from a variety of sources, shown right[5]:

Lightbulb jargon

CFLs - compact fluorescent lights

Incandescent - the ‘traditional' lightbulb... soon to become collectors items!

LEDs - light emitting diode

Carbon footprint - a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted through the combustion of fossil fuels to produce our electricity. The more energy we consume, the larger our carbon footprint. Using less energy in low energy lighting reduces our carbon footprint. Easy.
